Sunshine Coast Grassroots Trip

Harrison Watson, Liam Watson, Jared Smith, Aiden Woolliams, Jack Ni, Jordan Dunk, and Marley Mural headed off to North Vancouver’s Evergreen Squash Club for a fun filled day of squash led by Evergreen’s Alicia Haneine and Sunshine’s Murray Smith.  Nanaimo Squash Club also sent some of their grassroots juniors as well.  The juniors all had equal court time and were matched with players of similar ability.  The emphasis was on learning, fun, and making new friends.  For the Sunshine kids, this was their first time in a real squash club and their first squash road trip.

There was lots of great food and prizes, with everyone coming away with something – from grips to bags to racquets!  The kids all had a great day and hope to pair up again with their new Evergreen and Nanaimo friends in April.

Many thanks to the 2020 Fund bursary for assisting with expenses.

League starting 15-Oct-2011

It is time to get back on the courts!!!  Break out those racquets and find your shoes as the 2011-12 squash league begins October 15.
For a description of how the league works and an entry form please check out the S/C Squash Association website at http://coastsquash.ca  or simply fill out the attached form.

While you need to know how the scoring occurs (see website for more scoring details) as well as the ability to serve and return the ball, there is a level of squash for all abilities.  The main reason to play is to connect with new people and develop regular playing partners.

This year, the League will continue with women’s only boxes for those who would prefer to play only ladies.  Please indicate your interest in playing ‘women’s only’ by marking the appropriate box on the application.  For those ladies still interested in playing co-ed, submit the application as normal.

All forms require being dropped off with front desk staff at the Gibsons and Area Recreation Center before Oct 15 (you’ve got one week only).      Please include a cheque attached to the application as opposed to cash.  Cost to play in the league is $20.00 and $10 for juniors.

Junior Squash Pros Come to Coast

With the recent end to the junior squash season at the Gibson’s Recreation Center, the Sunshine Coast Squash Association brought in two junior squash pros to assist with the program’s year end wrap up. Attending from Vancouver were Zachary Leman, Boys Under 15 Canadian Champion, and Morgan Latriemolle, presently ranked 18 overall in Canada for the Boys Under 19 age group.

The junior pros spent the first portion of the day providing coaching to the boys and girls participating in the local junior squash program. Following the coaching, the guests played both adults and juniors, providing an opportunity for local players to be challenged at a high level of competition. Concluding the day, the squash community gathered to watch the two national level players play a highly entertaining exhibition match. In the end, the two junior pros did not disappoint. With the match games tied at two games each, the final game required eight extra tie breaker points before Leman won game five 19-17 (games normally end at 11).

Overall, the excitement of the exhibition match appropriately ended a great junior squash year with the squash community coming together to enjoy another entertaining squash event.
